If the following behavior occurs with your Mac OS computer, you probably have MacsBug, a low level debugging tool, installed onyour computer. When your computer crashes and you enter MacsBug, youwill see a screen with a white background, a column of seeminglyrandom characters to the left, a status area to the right, and, at thebottom, a cursor for entering commands. You can also enter MacsBug ifyou accidentally press the Cmd
and Power (thesmall triangle) keys at the same time or if you press the resetbutton. Though somewhat intimidating to the novice user, MacsBug canbe very useful for getting out of crashes that otherwise would forceyou to restart your computer. It is a very powerful tool for advancedusers, and beginners can benefit from a few basic commands. The mostuseful commands are listed in the following table:
Command | Function |
---|---|
g | This command will exit MacsBug and attemptto reopen the application that was active when the debuggerappeared. Use this command if you accidentally entered MacsBug bypressing the Cmd -Power (the small triangle) keycombination or the reset button. Sometimes this will work after acrash, but not if the crash was severe. |
es | This command is essentially the same as aforced quit. It will terminate the application that was running whenyou were forced into MacsBug and will try to get you back into Mac OS.This is usually the best command to use when you've gotten intoMacsBug because of a crash. |
ea | Like the es command, thiscommand will terminate the application that was running when youentered MacsBug, but it will then try to restart thatapplication. Although this will sometimes work, it can also cause amore serious crash. |
rs | This command unmounts all non-networkvolumes and restarts the computer. If the g ,ea , or es commands fail to get you out ofMacsBug, it probably means that the crash was too severe to recover, and that you should restart your computer with this command. |
rb | This command is similar to the rs command but will only unmount the startup volume. Inmost cases, you should use the rs command instead of therb command. |
how | Enter this command to find out whyMacsBug was activated. |
stat | Use this command to display informationabout the computer, including date and time, the current application, the last time it was restarted, and virtual memoryinformation. |
help | Get a list of help topics. You can alsoenter help followed by a command to get information aboutthat command (e.g., help stat ). |
To use these commands, enter the command, then pressReturn
. You may also press the Esc
key tosee what the screen looked like right before you entered MacsBug,though you won't be able to actually do anything to the screen. PressEsc
again to exit to MacsBug.
About 25 years ago, Apple released what was considered by some to be the most elegant personal computing interface available at the time, MacOS 7.0.1.
Apple's System 7 interface hasn't aged as well as other relics from 1991, like Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Nirvana's Nevermind, but the ancient computing platform nevertheless retains a certain charm. Now, thanks to the Internet Archive, you can experience some of that old school computing magic using your existing computer and a web browser.

The black-and-white graphical user interface was a simple but powerful tool that allowed anyone to use applications like Microsoft Word, BBEdit Lite, HyperCard, Microsoft Excel and design tools like Pagemaker, MacDraw, MacPaint.

Part of the affection for System 7 was not only due to its simplicity and ease of use, but its place in history. For many, the system served as the nine-inch window into the early versions of the mainstream Internet.
The Internet Archive's emulator lets you launch the operating system and use many of the applications that were popular at the time, including games like Risk, Cannon Fodder, and Shufflepuck.
And if you really want the full cave computing experience, there's an option to go full screen, which will make your current PC truly look like it's running MacOS 7.0.1.
What's the point? Well, beyond pure geek love of our computing roots, it's a great reminder to appreciate just how amazing that current touchscreen interface you'r using to run 10 apps at the same time really is.
